Demonstrating our environmental leadership

Whilst our environmental impact is relatively limited, we strive to demonstrate our leadership through clear and transparent reporting that makes sense of the measurable elements within our control and responds to external risks and expectations.

Naturally, the environment is widely considered an issue of concern primarily to classic heavy polluters - industrial giants whose environmental impacts are palpable, this is beginning to change. Companies such as ours are increasingly expected to acknowledge the impact – both direct and indirect – of their activities, and take action to reduce it.

Evidencing our commitment

Though our carbon footprint is very small we have been a signatory to the Carbon Disclosure Project since 2006, a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since 2007, and are included in the FTSE4Good.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the FTSE4Good track companies' economic, environmental and social performance, offering stakeholders an independent and objective measure. Our overall scores in the DJSI place us near the top of our sector.

Increasingly employees demand impeccable environmental credentials from their employer. Man is a 'green-leader' in the world of finance and widely recognised as one of the sector's most environmentally visionary organisations.

Aligning our impacts with the size and scale of our business

Man operates mostly from city based offices in 15 countries around the world. Other than in London and Switzerland, we generally occupy less than 10% of a building's total space, with services provided by the landlord. In such areas, our environmental endeavours necessarily focus on engaging with landlords and encouraging responsible behaviour, given the very limited impact of our own direct actions. We also recognise that air travel is integral to our business model and take great steps to mitigate the impact.

Acknowledging and addressing our environmental risks

Many of the environment associated risks Man faces could result in denial of access or loss of power and utilities to our key sites, compounded by travel issues for our people. These risks are addressed through our business continuity plans, data back-up and recovery procedures, and remote access infrastructure.
