Man Charitable Trust

The Man Charitable Trust was founded in 1978 and is an independent UK registered charity. It supports a wide range of charities, focusing particularly on certain specific areas: disadvantaged youth, literacy and numeracy, vulnerable populations and disaster relief.

If it has one overriding aim, over and above the relief of human suffering, it is to empower the most vulnerable and deprived in our society to change their own lives for the better.

Ours is a global commitment. While the main Trust is UK-based, and has substantial commitments to UK good causes, it also makes donations via overseas charitable committees in Switzerland, Australia, Canada and the USA.

Our core principle

Our core principle is to identify where and how we can achieve the greatest impact. We often partner with other like-minded funders to maximise the yield of our giving. We carefully monitor all our grants to ensure progress against agreed objectives.

Japan earthquake and tsunami

On hearing of these disasters in March 2011, Man immediately pledged $1 million via its Charitable Trust to relief efforts in Japan. In a response coordinated with its Tokyo office, the donation focuses on children affected by the crisis, with $900,000 pledged to Save the Children's Japan Emergency Appeal and $100,000 to local children's charities. In 2011 Man Tokyo employees donated around $60,000 to Save the Children Japan and Plan Japan.

Save the Children's Japan Emergency Appeal was set up to help children overcome the shock and stress caused by the disaster and devastation. It set up child friendly spaces - protective environments for children, freeing parents to seek food, work, accommodation, and friends and family.

Save the Children Executive Justin Forsyth said: “This outstanding donation by Man will allow our team in Japan to deliver specialist care directly to children, who are always the most vulnerable during any emergency. Our child friendly spaces will give children the care they need and a chance to return to a sense of normality after their traumatic experiences.”

Hidehiko Hayashi, Head of Man’s Regional Office in Japan, commented: “We are extremely fortunate that all of our employees and their families are safe, but we are acutely aware that hundreds of thousands of people have been left devastated by recent events. We will continue to ensure that we are doing all we can to provide support and assistance to Japan, as the nation works together to address this massive natural disaster.”
