Maintaining our presence in our communities

Lesley King-Lewis

We are passionate about maintaining our presence in our local communities, particularly in this difficult economic climate, and are also expanding our volunteering programme in order to maximise our impact through time and expertise.

Director, Man Charitable Trust

Aims and activities

  • To support organisations that can bring real change to the communities in which we live and work
  • To secure sustainable improvements in the lives of the disadvantaged in the UK
  • To alleviate suffering overseas by responding to international appeals for emergency aid relating to humanitarian or natural disasters

We achieve this by:

  • Providing grants on an invitation to bid basis or through negotiated partnerships with selected charities
  • Tracking success by measuring impact, carefully monitoring all grants to ensure progress against agreed objectives
  • Partnering with other like-minded funders to maximise the impact of our donations

Man’s charitable commitment

Our donations to the Man Charitable Trust and overseas charitable committees are based on 2.75% of performance fee income, subject to a minimum of 0.5% of Group pre-tax profits. Over the last five years, total donations have exceeded $50 million.

Trustees

Our Trustees are drawn from a representative cross-section of the company. Current Trustees are Peter Clarke (Chairman), Jon Aisbitt, Mark Chambers, Jasveer Singh, David Kingsley and Britt Lintner.

Criteria for support

The Trust prefers to concentrate support on smaller charities, where it can work in partnership and its donations can make a real difference. We fund charities' core costs, including salaries and overheads, and project costs. We prefer to focus on activities that directly help individuals, families and communities, and those that boost organisations' and individuals' own capacities and capabilities. The interest and involvement of Man Group staff is also considered. The Trust is always interested to hear about volunteering opportunities, though it does not give any preference to organisations or projects providing such opportunities. Grantees must demonstrate sound financial management. The Trust does not support charities which spend an excessive proportion of their funds on administration costs rather than providing services.
